Onimusha Way of the Sword boss difficulty ramps through the campaign rather than spiking at one fixed point. Early bosses sit around 2.5 to 4 out of 10, the back half rises to 5 to 6, and the final boss on Carnage peaks at 8.5.

Onimusha Way of the Sword boss difficulty ranked on Carnage

RatingBoss

8.5

Minamoto no Yoshitsune

7

Sasaki Ganryu (Altered)

6

Ifuu & Burai

5.5

Greater Nue, Shuten Doji

5

Benkei (Fully Armed)

4

Rasho-gan, Ifuu

3.5

Sasaki Ganryu, Dohatsu-ten

3

Byakue (Enhanced), Nue (Blue) & Nue (Red), Daidara, Benkei

2.5

Byakue, Dokyo

Two specifics matter more than the number. Altered Sasaki Ganryu deals two-hit kills on Carnage, and Benkei's (Fully Armed) cannon throw is a one-shot. If either of those lands, the fight is over regardless of how well you were reading it.

What the difficulty setting changes

Difficulty is not in the settings menu. It is changed at a Spirit Mirror via "Change Difficulty Level".

  • Story — more health and stamina damage dealt, less taken, noticeably wider parry, deflect and Issen windows, Action Prompts on by default.
  • Action — standard damage, tighter windows, bosses punish mistakes, Action Prompts off by default.
  • Carnage — near one-hit-kill lethality, much tighter Issen timing, extra and accelerated boss attack patterns, and Action Prompts cannot be enabled at all. Once a Carnage run starts the option disappears from the Spirit Mirror menu.

Story and Action can be swapped freely and unlimited at a Spirit Mirror. The full comparison, including what carries into New Game+, is on the difficulty guide.

The four real spikes

Greater Nue, in "What Lurks in the Shadows"

is the first genuine skill gate. It introduces Unavoidable Attacks, telegraphed by a bright pink or white glow on the attacking body part — these cannot be dodged with Reflex Dodge and Issen does not work on them, so only Parry or Deflect answers them. It forces face armour to be broken with the Oni Bow, Oni Strength or Break Issen, and phase 2 adds lightning rain plus electrified orbs on the floor. Late-phase sky bolts cannot be parried or deflected at all and must be moved through laterally.

Sasaki Ganryu (Altered)

is the hardest rematch variant: two phases with separate health bars, assisted by Oni Gioh, and considerably faster than his story fights.

Ifuu & Burai

is a paired sequence of wind and lightning that has to be deflected at exactly the right timing, and breaking one brother's stamina damages the other, so a clean read on one is worth less than it looks.

Shuten Doji

regenerates health, so passive play loses. He does not refill Hozuki Pouch charges between phases, so bring a full pouch and stay aggressive.

Minamoto no Yoshitsune

is the peak. Three phases with two health bars and no checkpoint between them, so dying in phase 3 sends you back to phase 1 even on Story. Common loadout is Charm of Awakening, Charm of Oni Power and Fencer's Strength, with Stimulants for gauge management.

Bosses that escalate when you hit them

Taking hits is mechanically costly, not just a health loss. Bosses taste Musashi's blood when they land hits on him and power up into a stronger phase. That makes the correct answer to a string you cannot parry "dodge out of range", not "block it and trade".

Boss Rematch also stacks harder variants above their story counterparts, and the final mission rematches Daidara, Byakue, the Nue pair, Greater Nue and Dohatsu-ten before Yoshitsune. Carnage makes those rematches considerably harder, and a rematch win on Carnage counts as clearing that boss on Story and Action, so one sweep covers all three tiers.

How the ranking was arrived at

The numbers are a Carnage ranking, which is the only setting where the order is meaningful — the same boss can move several places between Story and Action once the timing windows change. They describe how much of the fight is a test of reading rather than a test of gear, which is why the two 5.5 entries sit on either side of the 5.

Read them as a preparation order rather than a wall. Nothing in the top half becomes clearable by grinding, because the gate is always the pattern: the pink-glowing attacks, the healing, the two-bar phases.

How to prepare for a fight that is above you

The spike fights above are not stat checks, they are read checks, and the preparation is the same every time: widen the Issen window and cut incoming damage before attempting one on Carnage. Issen Window Extension plus Charm of Protection buys the room to survive the two-hit attacks, and a level 3 Regeneration pouch covers what the charms do not.

Practise the fight rather than memorising it. The Practice Ground rematch is the same opponent with no risk attached, so a failed attempt there costs nothing, and it is also where armament and charm combinations get tested before stones are committed. Build details are on the build guide.

The ordering also matters more than the preparation. Do the spike fights on Story or Action first, learn the pattern there, and only then move up — an unlearned fight at 8.5 out of 10 is the same fight repeated, not a harder one.

The rematch guide covers how that roster is unlocked and what it rewards.
