Onimusha Way of the Sword best skills start with Blazing State and work outward: widen your Issen window, improve deflect stamina drain, then fix your recovery economy. Skills are split into two trees — Basic Skills bought with Power Stones, and Special or Oni Skills bought with Oni Stones — and red souls are spent on combat skill nodes and equipment.

Why order matters here
A playthrough yields 54 Power Stones and 54 Oni Stones. That is enough to max the Basic tree but not the Special tree, so treat Basic as the foundation and Special as a choice between exploration economy, armament uptime and burst damage. Refunds are free and instant at any Spirit Mirror, so a build can be respecced at will and anything left unbought carries into New Game+.
Onimusha Way of the Sword best skills: the purchase order
| Step | Skill | Cost |

3 | Issen Window Extension | 1,500 Red Souls |
4 | Deflect Stamina Drain II | 3,000 Red Souls |
5 | Yellow Soul Yield | 1,200 Red Souls |
6 | Health Pool I, Stamina Regen I, Health Pool II | 150 / 400 / 700 Red Souls |
7 | Oni Vision Duration+ | 250 Red Souls |
Blazing State is the key first purchase. Successive parries fill the Blaze Gauge; when it is full the sword gains blue flame, increasing damage and stamina damage and causing enemies to drop more Blue souls. It makes good defence self-sustaining, so buy it before early pure-damage nodes.
Blaze Gauge Retention stops the gauge collapsing completely after you take a hit, so one stray strike does not erase several correct parries. If your Issen timing is already reliable, take this ahead of step 3; if you are still learning the instant counter, take step 3 first.
Deflect Stamina Drain II improves enemy stamina depletion, making Break Issen setups more efficient. It is a stronger mid-game investment than raw damage, because every faster stagger is another execution window.
Yellow Soul Yield improves your recovery economy, so defensive counterplay has staying power across long encounters. Take it right after step 4 if you are frequently low on health, or earlier if survival is what is holding you back.
The core defensive line
Deflect strengthens the timed counter that starts the resource cycle, and Deflect followed by Break Issen is the core pressure option — heavy damage to standard enemies and to bosses. Issen has the biggest reward and the narrowest window. Quick Step improves evasion against attacks that cannot be parried or deflected, such as punches, kicks and some grabs.
One-Handed Power improves the faster pressure attack after a stagger setup.
Soul absorption upgrades
Soul Absorption, Absorption Range+ and Move Absorption collect dropped Red, Blue and Purple souls more reliably and from farther away, including while attacking, so bosses cannot steal them. Buy these before anything else in that branch.
Oni Stone priorities
Buy the Oni Vision economy upgrades early, ahead of every other Oni Stone purchase: Oni Vision: Treasures, Oni Vision: Treasures 2 and Oni Vision: Search Range. They reveal valuables, Power and Oni Stones, enhancement materials, hidden paths and traps, which makes every later material run faster.
After that:
Oni Awakening: Duration, so Awakening becomes a regular damage cooldown instead of a rare event.
Handle Even Bigger Objects, for crowd control against pillars and barrels.
Upgrades for the two or three armaments you actually use, not all of them.
Blazing State Range, which extends reach while Blazing.
The Oni Bow's Charge Time and Ultimate Charged Attack, the latter stopping enemies regenerating stamina and enabling Break Issen.
Petrify, which instantly kills petrified enemies, and Assassination, which unlocks stealth kills from behind and is useful on every build.
Flat-Out Sprint, a movement quality-of-life option.
Charms that reinforce these skills
Charm of Zeal fills Blazing State faster, Blazing Charm strengthens attacks during it, and Reaper's Charm plus Charm of Enticement raise the red soul income that funds the rest of the tree. The full effects are on the charms guide.
What to buy when you are short on both currencies
The two stone currencies come from the same world, so a run that cannot find one is usually short on both. Oni Vision is the answer in that case: Treasures, Treasures 2 and Search Range reveal Power Stones, Oni Stones, enhancement materials, hidden paths and traps. Buying them early makes every later material run shorter, which is why they sit ahead of combat nodes in the Special tree even though they do nothing in a fight.
If you still cannot afford a tier, take the red-soul nodes first. They are cheap, they scale with how many enemies you kill, and they refund instantly if you decide to respec.
For Carnage and New Game+
Shift from the defensive charm set to Charm of Awakening, Charm of Oni Power and Fencer's Strength Charm, and save your consumables — Amulets of Introspection, Sun Dried Hozukis, Stimulants, Heavy Restorative, Greater Defence Talisman and Greater Might Talisman — for the attempt.
Which defensive style these skills support is on the build guide.
